In the Women’s ODIs Vs Australia on Saturday, December 30, Deepti Sharma made history by being the first Indian player to take five wickets. In the second One-Day International at Mumbai’s storied Wankhede Stadium, the 26-year-old off-spinner accomplished the feat.
Deepti’s stellar bowling performance saw her claim 5 wickets for just 38 runs in 10 overs. This not only secured her a spot in the elite club of Indian players with ODI fifers against Australia, but also surpassed Nooshin Al Khadeer’s 2006 record of best bowling figures (4 wickets) by an Indian against Australia in Women’s ODIs.
Deepti started her wicket-taking spree by removing the dangerous Ellyse Perry at 50. She then sent Beth Mooney packing after a failed DRS review. In the 40th over, she claimed the crucial wicket of Tahlia McGrath as she began to accelerate.

The final over was packed with drama. Deepti bowled Wareham with the first ball, but a successful DRS review by King denied her a double-wicket. Undeterred, she secured her five-for on the penultimate ball when Sutherland returned a catch straight back to the bowler.
This performance brings Deepti within one wicket of a major milestone – becoming the fourth Indian woman to reach 100 ODI wickets. Also, Deepti joined the ranks of legendary Indian cricketers like Murali Kartik, Sachin Tendulkar, and Kapil Dev who have achieved fifers in ODIs against Australia.
